Rzeszów, March 16, 2011 – The latest addition to MTU Aero Engines' group of companies is MTU Aero Engines Polska. It was set up in the south-eastern part of Poland on a stretch of land seven hectares in size near Rzeszów Airport and commenced operations in April 2009. MTU's new affiliate develops and manufactures stator and rotor blades for low-pressure turbines, among other items, assembles low-pressure turbines, and repairs parts.
The factory is using highly advanced machinery and unique repair techniques for which MTU is known worldwide. "In Poland’s Aviation Valley, we have established a center of excellence for uncooled turbine airfoils for all of MTU's future commercial engine programs," MTU Aero Engines CEO Egon Behle explains. Importantly, the entire value chain from development aerodynamic design, structural mechanics, thermal optimization, etc. to manufacture andrepair will unfold at this one location.
The operation started with 200 employees. Plans are to grow employment to over 400 people by 2012. It has some 380 people right now. MTU Aero Engines Polska CEO Krzysztof Zuzak explains: "We were able to hire highly-qualified Polish engineers; they have been groomed additionally by special training in Germany." More than half of the workforce were undergoing six- to nine-month training programs at the three German MTU locations at Munich, Ludwigsfelde and Hannover.
With a workforce of some 7,900 people, MTU Aero Engines is Germany's leading engine manufacturer and one of the major players in the engine business. In fiscal 2010 the company posted around 2.7 billion euros in sales. In the commercial area, MTU is the world's largest independent provider of engine maintenance services. In the military arena, it is Germany's industrial lead company for practically all engines flown by the country's armed forces. Having carved out leading positions in engine technologies, the company excels in low-pressure turbines, high-pressure compressors, manufacturing and repair techniques.
