ASD mourns the loss of Dr Gerardo Walle, Managing Director of BDLI

It is with deep sadness that we have to share that Dr Gerardo Walle, former Chairman and CEO of Diehl Aerospace and Managing Director of BDLI since early February, tragically died last Thursday (22 February). Our thoughts are with his family and our colleagues in Berlin.

ASD Policy Recommendations for 2024-2029 published

On Wednesday, ASD released its Policy Recommendations for the forthcoming European Parliament and Commission mandate spanning from 2024 to 2029. A press release was shared with media across Europe. Politico and Agence Europe reported.

ASD welcomes LDSIA as new member

ASD welcomes the Lithuanian Defence and Security Industry Association (LDSIA) as a new member. A press release was issued earlier today and shared with media. First media coverage in Politico.

ASD in The Washington Post and Defence News

The two publications look at the artillery ammunition shortage of the Ukrainian army in the light of pending US military aid and what Europe can do to mitigate it. Both articles reflect ASD comments that the European defence industry has significantly invested in expansion of production capacities to support Ukraine and to replenish and reinforce the stocks of armed forces in Europe, but that governments must take on greater risk sharing if further expansion is to occur. What is required is investment, firm orders and better and longer-term visibility of future needs.

De Volkskrant interview with ASD Defence & Security Director Burkard Schmitt

One of the leading daily newspapers in The Netherlands, De Volkskrant, examines some of the challenges faced in scaling up production of defence equipment including ammunition production in Europe and discusses Europe’s defence preparedness following decades of downsizing its armed forces and defence industries. The article highlights the complexity of decision-making and the need for increased defence spending to address current security threats and support Ukraine effectively.

EU policies & legislation

EDIS & EDIP to be announced on Tuesday. The European Defence Industrial Strategy (EDIS) and the European Defence Investment Programme (EDIP) are going to be published on Tuesday, 5 March. ASD is expecting media inquiries and preparing an initial statement. Politico and other media already reported this week about possible key features of EDIS.

Commission President von der Leyen calls for “turbo charging” of defence industrial capacity. Ahead of the presentation of EDIS and EDIP next week, Mrs von der Leyen outlined her ideas about how to foster European defence industry production in the coming years during a speech in front of the plenary of the European Parliament.
